CHARITY WINS AT RIVER MILE
Monday, 06 February 2012

After all the medals and prize money are presented at next weekends SPAR Redhouse River Mile, the real winner is sure to be the local communities of Nelson Mandela Bay. Organisers of the River Mile, Zports Event Management, have once again teamed up with the Rotary Club of Port Elizabeth Sunrise to ensure that all proceeds from the Discovery off-road triathlon, Caste Lite Beer Garden and the Rotary Quali Juice Kids Entertainment area will all go towards the community based projects of the Rotary Club.

"The SPAR Redhouse Mile, thanks to Zports, has become the main fundraiser for our clubs annual commitment to the Rotary Foundation," said club president David Raymer, "The Foundation provides much needed funding for our community based projects through matching grants, which effectively ensures that can almost triple the funding that we raise ourselves."

"One of our latest projects within the club at the moment is to supply of rainwater tanks to as many local schools as possible. These schools have, through the Wessa Eco-Schools project, established vegetable gardens as part of their school feeding efforts. Most of the schools have large buildings and harvesting rainwater will ensure that they are not relient on purchasing municipal water. We're confident that with sufficient support at the River Mile, our club will be able to realise a large portion of the needed budget for this project. As part of our fundraising at the River Mile event, our Rotary club will be also be manning a fruit stall, selling watermelons and spanspek donated by Habata."

The 88th River Mile is taking place at Sundays River on Sunday 19th February with over 3,000 people expected to attend the festival like event. Free entry into the area which is filled with vendors, craft stalls, kids entertainment and the Castle Lite Beer Garden ensures that the families get to enjoy a wonderful outing to Cannonville on the banks of the Sundays River just outside of Port Elizabeth.

"Raising funds for Charity has become a focal part of all our Zports events and it's great to be able to support such wonderful organisations like Rotary whose volunteers working tirelessly for our local communities," said Race organiser Mike Zoetmulder. "The River Mile is one of the oldest swimming events in the world and, together with Eastern Province Aquatics, we would like to try and establish the event as one of the signature social sporting events in the country."

Normal entries for the events close this Sunday with late entries being accepted through to race day. Information and maps of the event are available on

Local Rotarians Receive Paul Harris Fellow Recognition

30 August 2011 MyPE.co.za Port Elizabeth's Community Web Site

The Rotary Club of PE Sunrise recently rewarded three of its members with special awards at their recent club sponsors evening.

Rotary President David Raymer with Paul Harris Fellows; Barbara Foot and Michael Zoetmulder

Rotarian Michael Zoetmulder and past club member Barbara Foot each received a Paul Harris Fellow recognition, named after the founder of Rotary, which is the Rotary Foundation’s way of expressing its appreciation for a substantial contribution to its humanitarian and educational programs.

Rotarians have a tradition of supporting the Foundation by honoring others. It is because of world-wide donations to the The Rotary Foundation, that Rotary can carry out an array of programs that achieve beneficial changes in our world, such as improved living conditions, better education, wider availability of treatment and rehabilitation for the sick and disabled, and safe drinking water. Programmes like GSE and Ambassadorial scholarship are also funded through the Rotary Foundation. Rotarians often designate a Paul Harris Fellow as a tribute to a person whose life demonstrates a shared purpose with the objectives of The Rotary Foundation.

The Rotary Club of PE Sunrise has only ever recognised 4 people for the Paul Harris Fellow, these being the late Laura Slabbert, Gail Cillie, Olga Burman, past club member Vernon Wait and current member Daryl Burman.

Foot received recognition for initiating the clubs Twinkle Star school building project, one of the club’s biggest community projects to date, and for initiating and supporting the Global Diabetes Walk in Port Elizabeth. Foot also ensured that the visiting Indian Navy visited the Ubuntu schools during their stay in the city. Zoetmulder, a member of the Rotary Club since 2007, was recognised for his contribution to the fundraising of the club and his direct and indirect marketing and promotion of the PE Sunrise Club. Zoetmulder has ensured that proceeds from his involvement in events like the Redhouse River Mile and the Global Diabetes walk and the Ocean Racing Series all supported the clubs Rotary Foundation fundraising.

The club also awarded their Laura Slabbert Stadler Award to Rotarian Gerrit van Wyk. This award is an internal club award made annually by the incumbent President to a club member who has lived up to the highest ideals of Rotary. van Wyk has made a huge contribution to the club since joining in 2009. In presenting the award, Club President David Raymer also achnowledged the support of van Wyk’s wife Elsa in their contributions towards the club.

The Rotary Club of PE Sunrise is the only breakfast Rotary club in Port Elizabeth and meet on Friday mornings between 7am and 8am at the Connynhams Coffee Shop in Mount Croix. Why Join Rotary?

There are many reasons to join a local Rotary club:
Networking
An original goal of Rotary was to allow club members to meet periodically and enlarge their circle of business and professional acquaintances.
Service
Club members have many opportunities for humanitarian service, both locally and internationally. Rotarians regularly experience the fulfillment that comes from giving back to the community.
Friendship
Rotarians enjoy camaraderie with like-minded professionals, and club projects provide opportunities to develop enduring friendships.
Ethics
Encouraging high ethical standards and respect for all worthy vocations has been a hallmark of Rotary from its earliest days. In their business and professional lives, Rotarians abide by The Four-Way Test.
Leadership
Rotary is an organization of successful professionals. Team-building, fundraising, public speaking, planning, organization, and communication are just some of the leadership skills that club members can exercise and enhance.

Rotary's Guiding Principles

The Object of Rotary

The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:
FIRST. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;
SECOND. High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;
THIRD. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;
FOURTH. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

Avenues of Service

Based on the Object of Rotary, the Avenues of Service are Rotary’s philosophical cornerstone and the foundation on which club activity is based:
Club Service focuses on strengthening fellowship and ensuring the effective functioning of the club.
Vocational Service encourages Rotarians to serve others through their vocations and to practice high ethical standards.
Community Service covers the projects and activities the club undertakes to improve life in its community.
International Service encompasses actions taken to expand Rotary’s humanitarian reach around the globe and to promote world understanding and peace.
New Generations recognizes the positive change implemented by youth and young adults involved in leadership development activities, community and international service projects, and exchange programs that enrich and foster world peace and cultural understanding.

Diversity and Rotary

Rotary International recognizes the value of diversity within individual clubs. Rotary encourages clubs to assess those in their communities who are eligible for membership, under existing membership guidelines, and to endeavor to include the appropriate range of individuals in their clubs. A club that reflects its community with regard to professional and business classification, gender, age, religion, and ethnicity is a club with the key to its future.

Mission

The mission of Rotary International, a worldwide association of Rotary clubs, is to provide service to others, to promote high ethical standards, and to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through its fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders.

The Four-Way Test

From the earliest days of the organization, Rotarians were concerned with promoting high ethical standards in their professional lives. One of the world's most widely printed and quoted statements of business ethics is The Four-Way Test, which was created in 1932 by Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor when he was asked to take charge of a company that was facing bankruptcy. Taylor later served as Rotary International President.
4waytestThis 24-word test for employees to follow in their business and professional lives became the guide for sales, production, advertising, and all company relations with dealers and customers. His staff put the 'test' into practice and the survival of the company is credited to the simple philosophy. Adopted by Rotary in 1943, the test, which has been translated into more than 100 languages, asks the following questions:
Of the things we think, say or do
Is it the TRUTH?
Is it FAIR to all concerned?
Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
